The 12 Brazilian cities that are going to host the FIFA World Cup football matches in 2014 lay stress in the environmental sustainability. According to the reliable source, the Local Organizing Committee and FIFA hosted three seminars of Sustainability Training Program that are aimed to provide guidance for the operators of the 12 stadiums that would be in the focus of attention in 2014 World Cup Football.
It is reported that in the two days workshops that held in August 16 and 17 representatives of the 12 cities that host the football matches discuss their experiences on what they had done regarding sustainability. They also discuss the matter that they think could be improved both socially and environmentally.
The organizers of the seminar reported that from the very initial stage sustainability was the center of interest of all the host cities. However, a number of projects have not turned fruitful yet.
The CEO of the Local Organizing Committee, Ricardo Trade in a statement said that besides sustainability they are also aware of the future of the newly built stadium. It is informed that the newly completed Pernambuco Arena would generate on megawatt solar energy and the roof the site is able to capture rainwater to be reused in the arena.
The representatives of 12 host cities share their experiences and challenges that they have went through in term of introducing sustainability after the stadiums are inaugurated. Most of the people are agreed to the fact that these changes are quite impossible without FIFA World Cup.
Special Adviser to the Extraordinary Secretariat of the FIFA World Cup in Cuiaba expressed that they want to change the traditional image by taking the advantage of FIFA World Cup. They even include the state of Mato Grosso in this program that makes headline for causing the most deforestation of the nation. He added that they were the first to think about the concept of sustainability.
The federal government encourages other stadiums to follow suit, as an environmental certificate is needed in order to get financing by the Brazilian National Development bank. According to FIFA officials the initiative performed so well that the environmental certificate is become an essential requirement for the next FIFA World Cup that will be held in Russia in 2018.
The organizers of the workshops informed that they have scheduled their next workshops in November 2013 and February 2014. Source also informed that the Curitiba City Hall and Ministry of Sports supported the program.
Reginaldo Cordeiro, who serves as the secretary of the Extraordinary Secretariat of the FIFA World Cup in Curitiba and also representing Mayor Gustavo Fruet, stated that they are working hard to make their city sustainable besides being ecological city.
